Canadian Cartographic Association Web Map Award

The CCA Web Map Award recognizes excellence in web mapping and is open to all students of Canadian post-secondary institutions who have individually completed and produced a web map in the academic year preceding our annual conference at which the prize is awarded. The CCA Web Map Award consists of one prize of $250 selected from entries by a college-level, CEGEP, or university-level student studying at a Canadian post-secondary institution. To be an eligible submission, your map does not have to be the result of a course project but we ask for an instructor endorsement to verify that you are a student and, in some cases, to assist us in contacting you during judging.

Group projects are not eligible. This is a competition for individually-completed projects.

The CCA Web Map Award recognizes excellence in web mapping and is open to all post-secondary students who have completed and produced a web map in the preceding school year.

Note: The deadline for applications for this mapping competition is May 8, 2026.

Evaluation Criteria:

Communication / Presentation – Does the web map present an understandable, interesting story (or stories) with an identifiable theme, purpose and audience in mind?

Cartographic Design – Does the map make good use of current cartographic web mapping design principles and tools, balancing necessary data layers, appropriate web-ready multimedia components (visual quality with good interactivity) and compellingly presented?

Completeness and Coherence – Is the web map sufficiently explained  (through use of cartographic elements, interactive panels, accompanying text, etc.) for the intended audience to be able to work with it and understand the data-driven story being presented? Are data sources appropriately described?

Design / Effort / Creativity – What new and/or creative aspect of your design work or effort in creating this map are you most proud of? Be sure to briefly describe these aspects in your accompanying statement of objectives and methods.

User Interactivity – Are interactive components (popups, zoom control, layer control, etc.) functional for intended audience?

Submission

All entries must be submitted using the official online entry form below (if there are any issues using the form, then please do contact us for help). By submitting your entry you are also agreeing that you will keep your web map online for at least a year, and that the CCA may share your web map  on the CCA website and in various publications (CCA does not assume any ownership or copyright for the content).

Submissions will be evaluated by a panel of three judges, selected from the current CCA executive committee.

Thank you for thinking about submitting an entry. We look forward to reviewing your web map.
