Renaming the Award of Distinction for Contributions to the CCA
At the 2024 Annual Conference, the Award Committee decided unanimously to rename the “Canadian Cartographic Association Award of Distinction for Exceptional Contributions to the CCA” in recognition of Roger Wheate’s exemplary level of contributions to the association. From 2025, deserving individuals demonstrating exceptional contributions to the association will be awarded the “Roger Wheate Award of Distinction for Exceptional Contributions to the Canadian Cartographic Association“.
Roger became a member of CCA in 1975 while a graduate student at Queen’s University, continuing his membership since, and has been active as an Executive Committee member or Appointment of the Executive for more of that period than not — an extraordinary demonstration of committment. With his knowledge of cartographers and geoscientists with connections to Canada and internationally, and of how the CCA has conducted business, Roger’s advice has been invaluable within the Executive.
The following is a brief list of Roger’s contributions to the CCA through roles held:
- 1984-1986: Chair, Map Use Interest Group
- 1986-1988: Secretary, including editing the newsletter
- 1988-1992: Office Manager (membership management, editing Cartouche, other duties)
- 1997-1998: Vice President
- 1998-1999: President
- 1999-2000: Past President
- 2007-2013: CCA representative to the Canadian National Committee (CNC) for the International Cartographic Association (ICA)
- 2013-2023: Canadian delegate to the ICA (Chair, CNC)
- 2016-2023: Membership Coordinator
The CCA presented Roger with an Award of Distinction for Exceptional Contributions to the CCA in 2002. The 2024 Award Committee considered options to recognize Roger’s continued contributions to and participation in the CCA and decided that redesignating the award was well justified and appropriate.
The Awards of Distinction for Exceptional Contributions to the Practice of Cartography and for Exceptional Scholarly Contributions to Cartography will continue to be awarded with their existing names.
Congratulations and many thanks, Roger!
